What is VN Futures?

The VN Futures Project is a joint initiative powered by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) and the British Veterinary Nursing Association (BVNA). The initiative runs in parallel to the Vet Futures Project.

VN Futures aims to help the veterinary nursing profession to visualise the challenges it is likely to face over the coming years and how best to respond to them to promote and ensure a vibrant, rewarding and sustainable profession now and for the future.

How did it all begin?

VN Futures was originally included in the ‘Veterinary Futures’ project, which wishes to address the future of the veterinary profession over the next 15 years; however it became clear that the challenges and solutions for the veterinary nursing profession are very different to those for veterinarians, and so Veterinary Futures became ‘Vet Futures’ and ‘VN Futures’.

A ‘VN Futures Action Group’ was established in late 2015, the group including members of the veterinary nursing team, and those involved in the education, training, regulation and employment of nurses, ensuring that a wide knowledge-base was able to input to discussion on the priorities, hopes and ambitions for the profession. You can find out more about the Action Group.

A series of five nationwide events were held to encourage input from the veterinary nursing profession on their current concerns, and how they felt the future of the VN profession could be best secured.

From this followed development and publication of the VN Futures Report and Action Plan, which was launched in September 2016, and which shapes the future work and focus of the project.

This document aims to not only highlight key ambitions of the projects’ work and where we want to be heading as a profession, but the actions we may need to take to get there.

Following publication of the report, six working groups were formed to address specific ambitions and key aims of the project. Find out more about the working groups here.

‘It’s nothing to do with me, is it?’

Many may see the VN Futures Project as something that is not relevant to them – but if you are a veterinary nurse, a member of the profession, or a member of the public – and if you care about the future of the profession; then this project is very much to do with you, and we encourage you to find out more, tell your friends and colleagues, and share your thoughts and ideas with us.
